What is haul?

Haul is one full lunar year (about 354 days) of owning wealth that has reached the nisab.

Zakat maal is only due when both are met: your wealth reaches the nisab, and it stays yours for one full haul.

The count starts on the day your wealth first reaches the nisab. New savings of the same kind join the haul of the wealth you already have.

If your wealth falls below the nisab before the year is complete, the count starts again when it reaches the nisab once more.
